Monarch Fall Roost
Sightings report image

Date: 09/23/2025

Number: 3

1851 Hours
I observed 3 monarchs on the southside of a common hackberry (Celtis occidentalis) about 6 meters above ground. I originally observed 2 land at 1837 hours and a third one in the cluster when I returned later.

During a walk, I observed approximately 10 monarchs in the area flying and exploring trees. This was a lot less than the day before, but the weather conditions were drastically different – it was very cloudy, breezy, and appeared as if it would rain. Some monarchs flew to the south or toward tree lines in the west. Monarchs may have roosted earlier in the day due to weather and/or numbers are dropping.

Sunset was at 1847 hours. Cloudy and dark conditions. 72 degrees (22.22 C). Wind was from northeast at 9 mph with gusts up to 16mph. RH was 78% and dew point 65.

On Henslow Trail near Iron Bridge Trailhead at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie (U.S. Forest Service).
