Monarch Fall Roost
Sightings report image

Date: 09/26/2025

Number: 31

About 7pm in the evening. I counted 31 butterflies roosting scattered through a stand of red cedar trees near Madison KS. The monarchs were in the interior of the stand protected from weather (although there was very little wind and the skies were clear with a temp in the 70's). At most there were 3 or 4 in a small cluster with others scattered in an area of about 400 square ft. I watched the area for about 15 minutes. The butterflies would occasionally fly from one branch to another but I did not see any more coming in to roost. This is the first time I have seen them use this stand of trees as a roost. There is plenty of goldenrod in the fields around the home and some fall lilac blooms immediately adjacent to the tree stand.
