I changed the location of this feeder as an experiment and was pleasantly surprised to see the hummers (ruby-throats) start using it right away. In its previous location it was virtually ignored. We started the day with 3 ruby-throats and appear to have ended the day with 2, an adult female and a juvenile. I think the hummers were ranging farther afield for insects today. However there was a lot of nectaring at black-and-blue salvias, cigar flowers, and red-orange lantana. Neighbors were having an outdoor party that I think made the ruby-throats uneasy due to lots of movement and loud talking. The resulting evening feeding cutoff, 7:00 p.m. cdt, was about 10 minutes earlier than I expected. I hope we have at least 1 October sighting to report. 2 years ago our last ruby-throat left on October 31.
