Monarch Fall Roost
Sightings report image

Date: 09/28/2025

Number: 2

1822 Hours
I observed 2 monarchs on the southwest side of a common hackberry (Celtis occidentalis) about 6 meters above ground. These 2 monarchs roosted approximately 20 – 25 minutes before sundown. I also observed at least 3 other monarchs flying nearby exploring trees to the south of the trail. I did not locate their roosts. The number of monarchs observed was significantly lower than in previous weeks. Goldenrod, boneset, and asters are still in bloom.

Sunset was at 1838 hours. Temperatures are above average, 78 degrees (28.56 C). Wind was blowing from northeast at 8 mph with gusts up to 14 mph. RH was 62% with Dew Point at 64.

On Henslow Trail near Iron Bridge Trailhead at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie (U.S. Forest Service).
