Date: 02/19/1997

Number: 1

Second Graders at John Adame Elementary School in Alexandria, Virginia, planted 100 red emperor tulip bulbs in October 1996. We planted them in an enclosed courtyard area, and covered them with 6 inches of straw. We first noticed the plants emertging on February 19, at that time we measured 4.8 cm (2.25 inches) of growth. We measured again on February 26, and observed 10cm (4inches)growth! We had very warm temps last week! We also see some leaves beginning to spread on the tulips!
