Spotted first loon on Lake Monona in Madison just off the west shoreline approx. 30 feet from shoreline. At the time Lake Monona was approx. 65% open, while Lake Mendota, which had a pair all last year is still almost completely frozen. This location is typically where we see loons this time of the year, lots of small fish and large amounts of open water.(thanks to Madison Gas and Electric Companies discharging warm water into lake)
