Our third graders were surprised to see all twenty-two of the red emperor tulips were up and in two stages. Thirteen of the tulips were in full bloom. We could see the six dark staymen inside surrounding the ovary. The ovary had a Y looking shape at the tip top. The pollen on the staymen was a purplish-black color. We expected to see yellow pollen! The petals consisted of six sections. Their color was a deep, rich red. There were small blotches of yellow at the base of each petal. The yellow blotches could be seen inside the flower and underneath it. The petals were five inches tall atop a stem that measured approximately eight inches. The petals opened up fully, seeming to be reaching for the sun. They unfurled resembling a red porcelain cereal bowl. The remaining nine tulips were not blooming but were gently closed. The tulips impressed us with their deep color as well as fullness. We observed that a neighboring bed of red emperors closer to the street
