Lake Monona was now completely open, while the larger lake, Lake Mendota, was still largely iced over. My wife and I counted a minimum of 24 loons (common) while viewing approx. 85% of the lake. The water was dead calm, making it very easy to spot and take pictures. At one point there were five loons swimming with a bunch of sea gulls in an area of a hundred yards.
