Today I saw my first monarch of the year at Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge, Fairfax County, Virginia. Mason Neck NWR is located on the Potomac River about 16 miles directly south of Washington, D.C. (near Woodbridge, VA) The monarch was a very pale orange. I did not see it close enough to determine the sex. It appeared to be healthy, not tattered, and very fast.
