April 19, I was gathering butterfly weed to feed to monarch larva purchased from Monarch Watch. Ken Watkins from Pioneer R.E.S.A., a Georgia D.O.E. support facilty, was with me. We found 30-50 larvae on two butterfly weed plants. These two plants have grown through cracks in rocks for years. They are weeks earlier than those milkweeds growing in pastures. I would guess that the reson for so many being on them is that there are no other milkweeds up in this area.
