Loon (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/22/1997

Number: 1

This morning my mother heard the distinctive call of the Common Loon. She investigated further and spotted a Common Loon floating on the open water of the lake. We live on the shore of Paudash Lake which is located approximately 15 km southwest of Bancroft. The lake still has ice but there is some open water in the lower end of the lake. Usually there is at least one pair of loons in our bay. They arrive every spring before the ice has left the lake. They paddle about in the open water while they wait for the ice to leave. The arrival of the loons back to the lake has always been a sure sign of spring. Could spring really be here because Bancroft had snow as recently as April 18?
