Dear Journey North, Ice-Out has finally occurred in Gunnison. We adopted Blue Mesa Reservoir, the largest man-made lake in Colorado. We estimate the ice on Blue Mesa was 2 ft. thick. During the winter months many residents enjoy ice fishing, ice skating, snowmobiling and sledding on the frozen lake. On Sunday, April 13th, we observed that the lake had begun to thaw around the edges, but the main body was still solidly frozen. Our class was out of town on a field trip at Keystone Science School, when we returned on Wednesday, April 16th the lake was free of ice, except one small chunk at the mouth of the river which feeds into the reservoir. Amazing, within three days the ice had totally melted! Mrs. Weidemueller’s Class Blackstock Elementary Gunnison, CO
