On Firday (25 April) I received a call from another KU faculty member, Ted Johnson, saying that he had seen very faded, but untattered, female monarch moving through campus at 1:45PM. The temperature was in the mid 60's and the conditions were partly cloudy. Later (3:30PM), I visited my greenhouse on West Campus to collect some milkweed but thought it might be worth checking on the growth of the milkweeds in the garden adjacent to the greenhouse. I thought I might also find an egg or two. Surprise! In the middle of the garden there was an extremely faded and tattered female monarch moving very awkwardly among the new 1-6cm milkweed shoots laying eggs. She was actually crawling from plant to plant. This morning I checked for eggs and found 21 in about 60 clusters of milkweed shoots. These are the first eggs of the year.
