I spent a most of the weekend at the Monmouth Battlefield park in Central NJ (near Millhurst). At 1300 on Sunday 27 April I spotted my first Monarch of the season in a newly planted cherry orchard. It was a female in worn condition. She was flying low to the ground but I never saw her stop and deposit any eggs. I saw another female at 1355 in a field ~ one half mile from the first. The Milkweeds here are just coming out of the ground with stems 2-4 inches tall and no open leaves. I was only able to identify these stems as milkweed after finding dead plants from last year and finding the sprouts at the base of the dead stems. Then I was able to find hundreds of sprouts in the fields. I was not able to find any eggs. I located two Milkweed species in the Battlefield area. This is my first spring in NJ, I won't venture a guess as to their identification. I'll post that later. They are definitely not what I observe in upstate NY. It was a great day Sunday wi
