All Other Signs of Spring

Date: 04/30/1997

Number: 1

April 30 was the first report of a black bear being seen here in the Kuskokwim Valley (Southwest Interior of Alaska) Our School is doing a Radio Telemetry project with black bears. We currently have six bears with transmitters. As of April 30 4 of the 6 were confirmed to have emerged from the den. One had not emerged and one was not found. As of Friday 4/25/97 5 of the 6 bears were still in the den and one was not found. This seems to be about the average time of emergence for these bears even though Spring has arrived a little earlier this year than usual.
