Oriole (1st Baltimore)

Date: 05/12/1997

Number: 1

Tonight, while eating dinner at about 6:30 PM EST, my husband and I noticed a bird with a very black head eating from the suet cage that we hang out for the Nuthatches and Downey's in our neighborhood. This caught my attention, as it didn't appear to be a starling. (They love the suet too!) When I got up to investigate the bird, it flew up into our apple tree. It was a Oriole! Beautiful black and orange. I immediately cut up an orange to hang on the branches of my flowering crab tree as well as in the apple tree. I'm sure he'll be back! I'll keep you posted. Last year, the female came about two weeks before the male did. The male came with her one day. He ate a little from the orange slices I put out and off they flew! Never to be seen for the rest of the year. Nancy.com upstate NY (42 miles NW of Albany, NY)
