Oriole (1st Baltimore)

Date: 05/18/1997

Number: 1

I finally spotted a female Baltimore Oriole lunching on an orange in our backyard. I thought it a bit strange that only males had arrived on May 10, and that was about one week later than their usual arrival. Now the females seem to be arriving. Do the males arrive and scout out an area first? Are they stronger fliers? Or did I just not observe the females? They are wonderfully camouflaged! Just an additional comment. . . My husband and I live on the Root River and are treated to flocks of Canada geese migrating in fall and spring. Last fall I observed an odd bird among the geese and discovered it to be a snow goose. I have never seen one and certainly didn't expect to see one enjoying the company of Canadians! Dawn
