Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 05/11/1997

Number: 1

I saw my first Ruby Throated Hummingbird on May 11 at 10:30am. I live between Elora and Elmira, which is near Kitchener, Ontario. It was a male. I also saw my first Monarch Butterfly today at about 3:00pm at the same location. I was unable to tell whether it was a male or female. The skies were sunny in both cases, but at 3:00, it was beginning to cloud over. The hummingbird was sipping from my feeder and the butterfly was flying up and down from the ground to about 7 feet in the air.

This butterfly has really been on the move. Weather over the past few days has been quite pleasant, but rain is on the way. Kitchener, Ontario is right in the middle of south-western Ontario and about 55 miles north of Lake Erie. Many years ago, German settlers made this area their home. In fact, at one time, Kitchener was named "Berlin". There are many Mennonite farms in the area
