Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 05/04/1997

Number: 1

The monarchs are defiitely back in Carmel, Indiana, a northern suburb of Indianapolis. I found many eggs last Friday on the few shoots of milkweed (Asc. syriaca) in our school butterfly garden. On Sunday, May 4, I saw a somewhat faded, but not ragged monarch sunning on the walk in my backyard. Since then, I have seen four adults. All were somewhat faded, but intact. Yesterday a number of 4th and 5th graders watched (with me) a female depositing eggs on some of the shoots in the garden. They are loaded with eggs (about 70-80), with as many as 15 on a single small shoot, with no leaves even unfurled yet. The weather is still very cool, with highs just in the low 60's. Milkweed in the fields has not yet begun to emerge. On the 6th, I checked diligently on hands and knees in my normal collecting fields and found no milkweed at all.
