Today I received a call from a butterfly watcher in Ithaca, NE, about 20 miles north of Lincoln in southeast Nebraska. She reported seeing a very tattered, faded monarch in her yard, nectaring on a dandelion, yesterday afternoon (5/7/97). She said there was a chunk gone from its upper forewing. She could not distinguish whether it was male or female (I explained how to tell). The temperature in Lincoln May 7 was 83 F. with a brisk wind, 15-20 mph from the south. Also, two of my students reported seeing a monarch flying a few feet above them in their backyard, on May 5. Temperature was 72 F. with a 15-20 mph wind from the north. So far, we have no Asclepias syriaca up in our school butterfly garden, but some shoots of butterflyweed are up.
