Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 05/04/1997

Number: 1

Happy to read about the sightings in central Ohio. Last evening I had a call from Granville, Ohio (near Columbus) and they said that monarchs had been seen in both Granville and Newark (near by) by different people on both May 4 & 5. No milkweed was found but there was dogbane present. I checked my areas here along the S. shore of L. Erie just east of Toledo on 5/5 and found no milkweed shoots at all and saw no monarachs. WE had strong SW winds yesterday with temp. in the mid 60's and sun during the day before the early evening storms hit. The warblers had been in profusion in the morning but most had disappeared by early afternoon. Perhaps they took advantage of the winds and crossed the lake to Pt. Pelee before the storms hit. Today it is sunny with temp. to reach near 60'F. this afternoon. Hopefully the milkweed and monarchs will arrive shortly.
