While on a short vacation to Monticello on May 2, I observed an old female nectaring in Jefferson's gardens at Monticello and then laying numerous eggs on 6 to 8 inch syriaca plants in a small field just west of the mansion. I went over after she was done and observed the freshly laid eggs. Upon returning home to Hellertown, PA, I saw my first local monarch, a brightly colored one that flew by too quickly to get a good look. Syriaca plants in my backyard garden are now 4 to 6 inches tall. I have not noticed any in nearby fields, but I have a warmer microclimate caused by a wooden fence surounding my yard. If this is like other years, our local milkweed will be up in about 10 days. Back to Virginia: I'd also like to report that I noticed quite a few foot-high milkweed plants on the shoulder of I-64 just on the Charlottesville city
