Today (5-23) while planting in the school butterfly garden in Waterloo, IA a monarch floated by; this is the first we have seen this spring. It looked fresh and vigorous; it didn't stop at the garden but continued to fly across the playground. I was unable to determine its sex. The swamp milkweed in my home garden is up about 2" though I have observed no eggs. In the school garden we have planted asclepias incarnata, ice ballet, currassivica, and swamp milkweed. The students will observe and analyze monarch preferences this summer and fall.
