Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 05/17/1997

Number: 1

The first reported monarch sighting in the Toledo, OH, area 5/17. It was seen at the Ottawa NWR,about 18 mi. E. of Toledo. Very little milkweed has emerged. I did find one patch 10"-12" tall in a protected area but no eggs were found. No milkweed had emerged in surrounding regions along the roadside which usually is a good source for early eggs. Many other regions in the area showed no emergence of the plant. I went west of Toledo into the Oak Openings area and very few shoots were found there even in the meadows that were clean. The emergence is unusually slow and weather has been unusually cool. Winds have been variable but strong from all directions. Perhaps the monarchs reported at Pt. Pelee and in Ontario, just blew across the lake, especially with so little milkweed present here. Obviously there has been no "dumping" of eggs.
