What a difference in two weeks! When I checked the milkweed at Presqu'ile two weeks ago, none had emerged and temperatures were below normal. Last week, temperatures warmed up to 70+ F for a number of days (while remaining cooler around the shoreline of Lake Ontario and water levels remain high). I returned yesterday (June 6th) to find all sorts of milkweed - as high as 20 cm. And with this came our first monarch sightings. May Wilson, President of the Presqu'ile-Brighton Naturalists lives a few kilometers west of the park on Lakeshore Road (and about 100 feet from the lake). She reports seeing a very worn monarch in her garden on June 4th.
