Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 06/07/1997

Number: 1

I saw my first Monarch Butterfly at Wiarton Ontario at about 5:30 pm - it looked in good condition - wings were clean and complete no tags. It was foraging in an open overgrown field beside my house. The weather was clear and partly cloudy approx. 22 Celsius, little or no wind From NW. Hope this helps with your monitoring.

This is a significant sighting as Wiarton is located way up north at the base of the Bruce Peninsula on the west side of Georgian Bay. The closest major city is Owen Sound. I am sure some of you may have heard of "Wiarton Willy" - an albino ground hog - who determines how long our Canadian winter will be each Feb. 2nd, depending on whether he sees his shadow or not!
