I am an elementary art teacher at the Vandyke Environmental Learning Center (Vandyke Elementary, grades 1-4) in Coleraine, Mn. We have been following the migratory path of the monarch butterfly for months now. The last day of school at Vandyke and Marble Elementary, I took down and distributed the almost 500 colored butterflies the kids had made and we had hung all over the hallway ceilings. I have been looking and waiting to see my first monarch. TODAY...at 7:04 p.m. cst. one flew directly into my face. With great joy, I ran to the front of my house to witness six monarchs, one swallow tail, several yellow jackets and hundreds of dragonflies feasting on the blossoms of the lilac (white)tree next to my garden. Many people get to enjoy the return of the monarch much earlier than we do. BUT WHAT A JOY TO HAVE WAITED !!! Unfortunately, school is out and I can't share this with the kids. We'll just have to share our stories in the fall. Maybe someone will call
