Monarch Adult Sighted

Number: 1

Just a note for the record to say that on June 28 during warm sunny weather with a SW wind, I travelled slowly by car over large sections of rural eastern Ontario (Lanark to Manotick to Richmond to Perth and back to Lanark, and saw perhaps a half million milkweeds (A. syriaca) just in late bud stage and coming into early flower, but not a single monarch. However, we have had strong, hot SW winds June28, 29 and 30 with mostly clear skies (highs ~ 30 degrees Celsius). Yesterday a neighbour reported 2 monarchs on their meadow, and I went out for a bike ride this morning and saw 4. So we have had a major fly-in from the SW on these winds. One of the 4 was nectaring, the other three flying very powerfully over extensive milkweed areas. Don't know what sex they were. Perhaps they did not particularly like Michigan so kept on going until arriving here in their promised land. Ted Mosquin
