I managed to find some time on Monday (before cooler weather and rain again moved in!) to check the milkweed at Presqu'ile Provincial Park for eggs and larva. There is a great deal of milkweed, now about 75 cm high, and many with the new flower buds at the top. However, I found no eggs or larvae. Other nectar sources for monarchs, such as clover, are flowering.
Along one small road in the park, in an area called the Calf Pasture (years ago, it was a calf pasture!), the road is lined with a plant we refer to as blue devil. Here I located 5 monarchs - possibly attracted by the color or scent of the flowers. I captured 3 of these with the short net I had in the car. These were all male and the other two appeared very similar. They were in good condition. However, the color of their wings was a dull, weathered orange color.
