Grove Elementary Plants Butterfly Garden
On Thursday May 22 and Friday May 23, 1997 Grove Ele. School grades K-4 planted a butterfly garden and also a vegetable garden. With the help of Senior Citizens, Community Neighbors, A Master Gardener, Community Wrap and Serve Volunteers, Parents, Principal, Teachers, School Counselor, Custodian, and most importantly our STUDENTS we had created a habitat for insects. But most importantly a habitat for Monarchs. We planted 16 different species of wildflowers common to Illinois. Our plot is a prairie restoration area. Giving this time to grow over the summer paid off for the beauty we are seeing now. It has proven its purpose because of the monarchs and other insects we have been seeing out there as we visit weekly. The monarchs that we have been rearing in the classroom have been tagged and released from our garden. The kids love being out there. We also erected a GROVE SCHOOL sign in front of our building.
