Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/19/1997

Number: 1

I stopped to watch a hunting red-tailed hawk at 8:30 am today. I noticed the orange vines along the fency it was sitting on. As I watched the "leaves" of this vine started to fly by the hawk's head. It was a roosting flock of Monarchs taking off as the morning sun reached their roosting area. The Monarchs covered a vine on a four foot fence for about 30 ft. There were hundreds. I continued to watch the butterflies fly by the hawks head for another five minutes before having to leave. When I returned to the area at 11:30 am all Monarchs were gone.
