Webster Hill Elementary School (K-5) is the site of the first Butterfly
House in the state of Connecticut. The project is entitled "The Living
Courtyard". Financed and constructed by volunteers, the house measures
26'x 40' and is arched to a 12' peak. The house is covered with a black
plastic shade cloth and inside monarch butterflies and a miscellaneous
assortment of others are raised. The monarch are all native to Connecticut and raised from field collected eggs and larva.
This project is entering it's 2nd year in which the Courtyard is planned to be an outdoor learning environment. This year the school will add a composting station, tool shed and crop gardens (in the spring). The uniqueness of this project is that every component "fits neatly" into the schools' existing curriculum, whereby every grade level can take part.
