Last spring, thanks to a grant from the WEst Virginia Fund for Education, my fifth graders planted a butterfly garden beside the school. We bought several perennials from a local nursery and students grew some plants from seed and transplanted them in May. We also transplanted several milkweed plants. We were rewarded this fall by finding an empty chrysalis on a daylily leaf and finding two larvae which we are raising in the classroom.
