Dear Journey North:

Last spring students who participated in the Journey North program and some of their parents and grandparents planted a butterfly garden at our school. We planted several varieties of milkweed plus some nectaring plants.

On August 16, I watched a monarch laying eggs on the milkweed. On August 21, I counted 87 monarch caterpillars eating the milkweed. The caterpillars were various sizes from tiny to fat. By the end of the next day, they had eaten all of the milkweed, leaving only some stalks. Then
the caterpillars disbursed to other areas looking for more food. Several science classes got to see the caterpillars in action! It was incredible!

On September 19, a friend saw 75-100 monarch butterflies at a
location approximately 23 miles east of Auburn, Alabama. They were nectaring and flying away immediately on their journey south.

Thank you for providing the Journey North program through which we can learn about the fascinating monarch bu
