This garden was planted at the end of May and kinda grew out of a more "global" project involving restoring habitat for the monarch butterfly. Our last mine closed down last year and the razed sites seemed almost perfect "meadows" for establishing milkweed. Rio Algom mine thought so too and very generously got us into the seed business - very expensive stuff when you can't wait for Mother Nature to provide. So, with acres of mine sites to play with - plus another five acres sweet-talked from NAVCANADA - we're now in business. Right now I'm anxiously waiting to see how many of the 2,016,000 seeds will actually grow. The "soil" is terrible and the weather is hot, but at least the plants are trying - about 3/4" high and growing in all the places we sowed. Actually got the surprise of my life just yesterday when I was checking the garden plots - a rather tattered, faded female monarch was actually flitting and landing on these small seedlings!!
