Signs of Fall

Date: 10/02/1997

Number: 1

Another migration is making its way through York this week. Hundreds of blackbirds are swarming through our trees and stopping to feed on worms and grubs in our yards. In the evening they swoop into town like a black river to root in the trees for the night. At daybreak, the river of birds leaves town for the fields to feed on grain and insects disturbed by the harvest machines or worms turned up by the machines working the ground. You can't miss them. They make a terrific noise passing by!
