Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/02/1997

Number: 1

My children and I returned to Odiorne Point after school on 10/2. It was a warm afternoon, with almost no breeze. We spotted about 30 monarchs during the hour and a half we were there. At first they were mostly on the rag weed closest to the ocean, but as the sun got lower and the shadows longer they were spotted mostly on the grass in a sheltered picknic area. We netted 11. There were several children and parents wathcing us. We told them about your program and Monach Watch's tagging program. One of the children and her mother was from Russia. We named one of the females "Katerina" tag #SY435 after this little girl. We also named two others after the other children that were watching, "Sam" #SY434, and "Anna" #SY436. We let these children release the Monarchs themselves. I think these butterflies made wonderful US ambasadors.. By this time it was about 5:30 pm and getting cool. The rest of the Monarchs had gathered at the top of our cage so we decided to take them home
