Hello from Blue Hill, Maine,
You might be surprised to hear that we still have monarch butterflies. Our multi-age 1-2 classrooms have been studying monarchs since September. Our four multi-age 1-2 classrooms and a 6th grade classroom have raised and tagged around 24 butterflies this year for Monarch Watch. We raised them from caterpillars. This has been an incredible year to find caterpillars and butterflies. One teacher reported seeing many butterflies on Pond Island just two weeks ago. Another teacher observed over 50 butterflies in Brooksville feeding on asters and goldenrod just two weeks ago. This weekend many of our caterpillars emerged from their chrysalis and will be tagged and released today. We still have a few more left to emerge. We are also sending paper butterflies to Mexico.
