The Butterfly Garden and Native Prairie cover an area about 130 ft.x 60 ft., with a sidewalk separating the two. Planted as an all-school project in 1989, the garden includes over 40 different perennials, annuals and shrubs, wild and domestic, that either are nectar sources or host plants for various butterfly species.
The native prairie, featuring eight different grasses and about 25 wildflower species, also an all-school project, was planted in 1990. Bark paths through the garden and prairie allow students to get close to plants and flower beds in order to spot butterflies or identify plants and grasses. A band of 12 conifer trees, secured through a grant and planted by Fredstrom families in 1989, shelter the garden on two sides.
