While on a field trip to Middle Island in St. Marys, WV my students and I observed a few monarchs feeding on asters and goldenrod! We didn't expect to see any so late in the season, but we were glad we brought our Monarch Watch tags. We caught 1 male and tagged and released him after the students got to see him.
Middle Island is part of the Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge and our fifth graders were there to learn more about wildlife habitats, soil and water quality. It was a sunny cool day- about 60 degrees Fahrenheit so the monarchs were a bonus.
