Our school district covers a fairly wide area (38.15N to 38.28N and 75.40W to 75.52W). Students observed monarchs over a three day weekend 10/11 to 10/13. The average number of sightings of monarch butterflies was 3 per sighting. The range was 1 to 10. Butterflies were seen nectaring on flowers ( most of the children reported yellow flowers) and in flight. Since we raised 11 monarchs over a three week period in our classroom, these children are capable of making accurate reports.
