Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/24/1997

Number: 1

On Friday I went to Austin, via Hwy277 to 377. We must have seen 1,000 monarchs hoofing it out of the understory. The winds were NE 10-15 mph that day. On Saturday the winds kicked up to 20-25mph and Amistad Lake was white capping. Today is Sunday, it is getting cold and the winds are still blowing 10-15 from the NW. Another cold front...with frost will hit tonight.

Del Rio High School students have been tagging the monarchs for about 2wks. now. The process has been a little slow, but we have been able to do approximately 25-50. The kids have really enjoyed catching the butterflies. One morning we tagged a utterfly that had been in the refrigerator over night. We released it in the afternoon, but it was still a little "sleepy". It drifted off for a minute, and then lit on the shirt of the student that released it, as if to say thank you and goodbye. I know this experience has really changed some of the kids and they've all gotten a thrill out of helping scientific study.
