My fifth graders were wildly excited today when they witnessed a
red tailed hawk swoop down and capture a 13 lined ground squirrel
just outside our window. We are a rural school district in North-western Illinois and these hawks are rather common. However, to see this feeding activity so close really amazed the kids. The day was overcast, light northeasterly winds, and 40 degrees. The hunt site was our school playground with surrounding homes. The hawk "sat" on the squirrel until it stopped struggling and then flew off while the kids stood open- mouthed! We later determined with our Peterson Guide that it was a female. http://home.revealed.net/crhanna/index.html
