Signs of Fall

Date: 12/13/1997

Number: 1

I was sitting in my family room in Mequon when I heard a thump on my window. I saw a Blue Jay land under it. I was concerned that it may have been injured so I went out to investigate. Upon my arrival the bird quickly shot up. I found it was not a Blue Jay at all. It was in fact a hawk of some sort. It dropped something that had been in its mouth--a dark eyed junco that had been, moments ago, feeding at our feeder. The hawk sat perched on a nearby tree and watched as I recovered the Junco. I tossed the small bird towards the hawk which quickly picked it up and flew away. It turned out to be a juvenile sharp shinned hawk.
It was an amazing experience to be within arms length of such a beautiful creature.
