Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 01/13/1998

Number: 1

In early January we discovered one monarch chrysalis and one monarch larva in our school sanctuary. Later the newly-emerged- from-the-chrysalis adult was seen. We assume these were late hatchings from the fall. As late as December 18, 1997, we had as many as 15 larva still on our butterfly weed.
In late January, 2 monarchs were seen in the sanctuary. One for sure was newly emerged because its wing was malformed and it had difficulty flying. It was later seen dead in our pond.
