Hummingbird, Rufous (FIRST)

Date: 02/21/1998

Number: 1

Talked to the local birding experts last night ... an expert is a birder with "frequent flyer miles" from going around the world to do their birding or flying just to see one special bird in North America. We usually have many ruby-throats that overwinter here along the Texas coast. But of special interest this winter has been a male rufus that has spent the winter. A rufus male is like a miniature burst of orange fireworks suddenly appearing in the backyard. Any hummer showing up during the winter at the adjacent bush when you are puttering around in the yard is a burst of something special. Harlen
