Maple Syrup (FIRST Sap Run)

Date: 02/26/1998

Number: 1

Our neighbor, Bob Stark, has been tapping the sugar maples in the neighborhood since 1977 and he has kept records of each year's yield. On February 26, 1998 he put in 90 taps, one fewer than last year. On the next day, February 27 he obtained 65 gallons of sap. Last year he put in 91 taps on February 22 which produced a yield of 875 gallons of sap and 61.5 quarts of syrup for the season. He pulled the taps on March 29. We experienced a very mild February. with less snowfall, more rain and higher temperatures that average. In our region the average temperature for February is 23.8F. The average temperature for February, 1998 was 30.8F. Many people are predicting that the maple sugar season will be very short with disappointing yields.
