Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 02/01/1998

Number: 1

Greetings from Sugar Land, Texas.
We've been observing a small but hardy population of monarchs at our suburban Houston, Texas suburban school garden. We've definately had monarchs for the past 3 winters. This winter, due to the mild, frost free temperatures, we've had Asclepias curasavica bloom all
winter. Females have laid eggs all winter; we've found eggs and cataerpillars since the New Years. The caterpillars, if left out doors do not pupate.
Two winters ago, despite freezing Christmans to New Year's temperatures, we still had caterpillars appearing during those months. We've planted a lot of milkweed in our community and perhaps the monarchs are taking it easy in Sugar Land!
