Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/15/1998

Number: 1

Probable US migratory monarch seen flying along the cliffs high above the Rio Grande at Roma, Texas in southwestern Starr County (~50 miles west of McAllen). Carrie Cate and I briefly saw this individual which appeared to be in good condition. Temperature was ~80F. After 2 months of above average warm weather, March turned slightly chilly, damp and windy. Today (3/15),
the sun came out and the wind dropped down a bit. (First migratory monarch was seen in Rio Grande Valley in 1997 on Feb. 28).
