Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/23/1998

Number: 1

We saw the Monarchs (scads of 'em at least 30) on St. Vincent Island (National Wildlife Refuge) which is in Apalachicola Bay near the town of Apalachicola east of Panama City. We also saw Monarchs the same day on St.George Island. The date was 23 March. We scoped a few to make sure they weren't Viceroy's. In terms of the condition of the wings, I can tell you this: The few that
we looked at closely (with binoculars) did have fresh looking wings and
were brightly colored. That is not to say that all the others weren't.
The one that we noticed with dull looking wings, we only looked closely at
because it appeared to be flying in a funny way. I'm not sure how valid
these observations are since we didn't have wing wear in mind at the time.
